ManMetRiders

ManMetRiders is Manchester Metropolitan University’s Bike User Group.  We meet every couple of months to discuss cycle-related issues.

Our priority at the moment is the improvement of the currently poor facilities for cyclists.  We want secure cycle storage areas, lockers, showers and changing rooms, across all MMU sites This has all been promised as part of MMU’s Green Travel Plan. If you are a past, present or future cyclist you can sign up to find out what’s happening and to give your opinion. We would welcome information on cycling routes, tips to other cyclists, or anything else you think would be of interest.

CTC BUG membership

Man met riders has Bike User Group affiliation with the CTC. This essentially means you can get very similar membership to the standard membership (£37) for only £12. For details and to sign up see here:

Emal Andrew Hough a.j.hough@mmu.ac.uk for the passcode if you are a ManMetriders member

An Interest Free Loan Scheme has been Introduced to Replace Cycle Scheme

The University has now extended its Travel Loan Scheme to include the purchase of a bicycle and associated safety equipment by staff up to a value of £1,000.  Bicycles purchased using the loan must be used primarily for a member of staff’s home to work travel. The loan is currently interest-free.

The University continues to provide interest-free loans for public transport tickets and the maximum value of the loan has now increased from £2,500 to £3,000.

The Travel Loan Application Form (Fin 12) and the Terms and Conditions (for  both bicycles and public transport) can be found on the Financial and Legal Services website at http://www.finance.mmu.ac.uk/  Please ensure you sign into the webpage by using your MMU ID and password, click on the ‘Documents’ tab and follow the link to ‘Financial Forms’  where you will find Form Fin 12 listed.  Alternatively, go to the Public Transport link: http://www.mmu.ac.uk/staff/travel/public-transport/

If you have any questions concerning the scheme please contact Claire Green in the Payroll Office on Ext 1854 or at c.l.green@mmu.ac.uk

Cycle Scheme

Please note: The Cycle Scheme at MMU is currently suspended due to the HMRC changes to the Fair Market Value process in Aug 2010. See below for an explanation of how it now works. An update will be provided as soon as a decision is made. Apologies to all concerned.

Cycle Scheme have now finalised their process and have had to fall in line with the new HMRC guidance. The long and short of it is after one year Fair Market Values are much higher than before (25% if over £500 or 18% if under) but you can extend the agreement by 3 years with Cycle Scheme which brings the values right down to an attractive level (7% if over £500 or 3% if under).

In terms of whether this affects you if you are on the scheme. If you have already paid the 5% and completed then you do not need to worry. The new system should only apply to those that make their last payment from October 10 2010. If your last payment was in Sept 10 2010 or before you should be on the old system (if you get contacted by Cycle Scheme and it seems you are on the new system and you think you should be on the old, don't pay it and let me know so we can confirm the correct one). MMU will shortly be writing to those who are affected by the change.

To obtain a cycle scheme bike (when Finance and Legal reinstate it...):

  • Get a quote from your local bike shop, if not already (or know how much you intend to spend)...maximum £1,000 (Click here for some bike purchase suggestions by MMU bike owners)
  • Log on to the MMU Cycle Scheme page: www.cyclescheme.co.uk/361c3b  – (note the employer code 361c3b) and click request a certificate.
  • Follow the steps - easy.
  • Then the request is emailed back to the University, then you will get a Contract Variation from HR/Reward and Planning - which you have to accept (if you want a bike) - MAKE SURE YOU NOTE THE Terms & Conditions - this is a salary sacrifice scheme.
  • This is then approved by MMU with Cyclescheme.
  • Once all complete, Cyclescheme will invoice the University.
  • Upon receipt of funds from the University (may take a couple of weeks to be paid), a Voucher will come out to you pretty quickly.
  • Upon receipt of the voucher, trot off to your bike shop of choice and order the bike and accessories you'd like.
  • One thing....budget for a good lock...do not get any sort of cable lock - get a quality lock - if not sure what's good - ask in the shop. See the theft stoppers page on this site for more hints

Monthly Cycle to Work Rides - every first Wed of the month

Launched on from the success of the Bike to Work Day 2008, and building upon Bike to Work Day 2009 we have held monthly cycling to work events event month since October 2008. The rides are on the 1st Wednesday of each month starting from points around Greater Manchester and head into the Higher Education Precinct (HEP, which comprises Univ of Manchester (UoM), MMU, RNCM and MRI/hospitals). The rides are designed to be friendly and to encourage new people to take up cycling, so we tend to take a little longer and use the quieter roads.

FREE BREAKFAST TO ALL PARTICIPANTS! Next ride is on Wednesday 3rd August 2011, and free breakfast will be held at the EATS Restaurant, University Place, Manchester University 8,20am - 9am

See here for all the details, including the guided rides available from a number of starting points around the city:
