If you want to get a new bike (maybe through cyclescheme), here are a few examples of bikes used by MMU staff/students:

I have had two Trek 7100 bikes over the last 6 years and think they are great. The front forks and sprung seat post help over the bumpier bits of road in Manchester, and are good for getting over kerbs. Makes the ride very comfortable. It is also equally happy on tow paths and I have even done a bit of off-road cross country on mine (but make sure you have the tires for it). They are widely available and you can get them from either Bike Doctor or Harry Halls in Manchester at £350.

I am now moving to a Trek 7.3 FX under the cycle scheme as it looks like a slightly faster commuting bike. I'll let you know what I think when I get it.

I bought a dahon MU SL (from Bicycle Doctor in Rusholme) as it's a speedy and super lightweight (8kg) folder. (The Brompton is the usual recommended folder, but you can only get 2x derailleur gears and I have wrecked their hub gears twice)

The Marin Muirwoods (from Bicycle Doctor in Rusholme) is my steel fixed-framed urban mountain bike - the one the Police use. I prefer steel as it rides ok without suspension even on cobbles

Not something many, if anyone would go for, but it shows what you can get. This is a custom built fixed wheel road bike (one gear and you can't stop pedalling), from Wills Wheels (Bardsley's Cycles) on the A6 in Heaton Chapel. It includes hand built wheels and high end Ritchey components. Ideal for a 'keen' cyclist as a commuter as it has no gear mechs, so it cuts down on cleaning and maintenance time, and it's a great way of building strength and flexibility in those old legs. Fully loaded it weighs just 8kg's with guards

Have you bought a bike, that's still available and that you would recommend as a commuter, from a cycle scheme dealer? If so,please can you email guy lancaster g.lancaster@mmu.ac.uk with your name, the make, model, dealer, where you got it, and maybe a photo of yourself on the bike for inclusion above - or you can post below.
